Theresa Grentz, WGAP Treasurer and standout golfer at Hershey’s Mill, has a long and storied career as a basketball player and coach. Theresa grew up in Philadelphia playing for Cardinal O’Hara High School She then went on to Immaculata College. While playing for the Mighty Macs, she led the school to 3 AIAW National Championships from 1972-1974. The 1974 title game was the first-ever live coverage of a US women’s basketball game. She scored over 1,000 points and was a First Team All-American 3 times (first woman to receive this honor 3 times). Called the most dominate player of her generation by those who faced her. Her jersey number (12) was retired by Immaculata. Theresa represented the United States at the 1973 World University Games in Moscow, winning silver against a tough USSR team.
Equally impressive as her playing career, is Theresa’s coaching career. She was the head coach for schools such as St. Joes, Rutgers, University of Illinois, and Lafayette College. Theresa was also tapped to coach at the national level. Her 1985 team won the gold medal at the William Jones Cup competition in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1990, she coached the USA team to a gold medal at the Goodwill Games and World Championships. She was the 1992 Olympic team head coach in Barcelona, where the team took home the bronze medal.
Her list of accomplishments goes on and on. Most important to her is her husband Karl, their sons, and grandchildren. We are so glad to have her as a member of the WGAP Executive Committee and a champion of women’s golf in Philadelphia!
Congratulations Theresa on your well-deserved honor! We look forward to watching you be inducted into the Hall of Fame on September 10, 2022.
