Old York Road Country Club proved to be a challenge for our competitors this week.
In a week filled with matches coming down to 18, or going extra holes, our Championship Match between Samantha Perrotta (Old York – Chesterfield) and Alyssa Roland (Overbrook) was no different. After the first 18, Roland held a slim 1 up lead. Neither player was playing her best golf at that point. That all changed for the second 18. Roland parred the first to go 2 up. Then pars on 4 and 8 put her 4 up with 10 holes to play. A commanding lead, but Perrotta (a finalist last year) was not going down without a fight. Perrotta birdied 9 to cut the lead to 3 up. Then a great up and down on 11 put her down 2. Rolling in a 30 foot birdie on 12 put her only 1 down. After a couple holes tied with pars, Perrotta birdied the 15th to square the match. Both players made great up and downs on 16 and 17 to remain all square. 2 pars on 18 meant the match was headed to extra holes. Alyssa had a close call on both holes 1 and 3 for birdie, but couldn’t get either putt to drop. The match was halved on holes 1-3 with pars. The 4th hole saw Samantha hit a great chip shot from the pine trees left of the hole and two putt for par. Alyssa was over the green in 3. Her delicate chip shot left her with a 6 footer to extend the match. Unfortunately, the epic match ended at that point. No one wanted to see either competitor lose in such an amazing competition. The 40 hole match is the longest in WGAP Match Play Championship history.
In the first flight, Applecross’s Liddie McCook defeated Manufacturers’ Tracy Albertelli 7 and 5.
In the second flight, Philadelphia Cricket’s Marji Goldman won a back and forth match against Tavistock’s Susie Kirk on the 19th hole.
