The rainy start to the week gave way to beautiful weather and impressive golf as our Match Play Championship got underway at Sandy Run Country Club. Some of the top amateurs in the area teed up in hopes of capturing the Championship.
The finals saw veteran Meghan Stasi (Tavistock) going up against newcomer, Clare Gimpel (Whitemarsh). The match was very tight. Stasi went 1 up after the first with a birdie. Clare won the long par 3 second hole with a bogey. Then Clare went 1 up on the 4th hole with a par. Stasi came back, winning 5 and 6 to go back 1 up. Clare brought it back to all square with a birdie on 8, hitting her approach to 3 feet. A par on 9 put Clare back to 1 up at the turn. Meghan’s par on 11 squared up the match. Meghan then won 13 and 14 with pars to take a 2 up lead, the largest of the day. Clare battled back, winning 17 after Meghan three-putted. The 18th hole saw Stasi hit a close approach, and after Clare missed her birdie putt, Meghan’s two putt par was enough for the victory.
This puts Stasi on 2 wins behind Helen Sigel Wilson, who holds the record at 12 wins in this tournament.
