Cara Basso Successfully Defends Her Women’s Match Play Title

Cedarbrook Country Club provided a perfect venue for this year’s Women’s Match Play Championship.  A strong field with many repeat champions in the mix, such as 11-time winner Ann Laughlin, combined with lots of young talent (Cara Basso, Katie Edelblut, Cassidy Gavaghan) meant some great golf had to be played to win matches.

Cara Basso, of Whitford Country Club, came into the week a heavy favorite in the Women’s Match Play Championship.  Her steady play all week brought her to the finals to face Honeybrook’s Amy Kennedy.  In the 36-hole final, Cara opened with a 66 to take a 8-up lead.  She continued her stellar play on the second 18, not giving Amy any chances to gain any ground.  Cara closed out the match on hole #7, with a 12 and 11 victory.

Our first flight final was a close one.  Diane Bartunek (RiverCrest) was playing Avi Snyder (Springhaven).  Diane held the lead for all of the match, but Avi made a run on the back nine to get it to a 1-up lead for Bartunek going into 17.  Diane sunk a five foot putt for par on the 17th hole to claim a 2 and 1 victory.

The week started with some strong qualifying scores.  Catherine Elliott, Merion, was the low qualfier with 73.  Ruth Averback (Old York Road) won low net honors with a 70.
