Our largest Boyle Cup field ever saw 6 flights of action over two days at Blue Bell Country Club, August 9th and 10th. Our Championship Flight winners, Allie and Kevin Robertson (RiverCrest) overcame a tough 4th round loss to Philadelphia Cricket’s mother son duo of Sue and Andrew Curran. Allie and Kevin bounced back to win their last match against 2018 champs Becky Sanderson and John Brennan (Philadelphia Cricket). The 6.5 to 3.5 victory was enough to claim a 2.5 point victory over defending champions Megan and Brian McGowan (Blue Bell).
In the first flight, mother son duo Carolyn and Matthew Torchiana (St. Davids) never lost a match. Their four wins and one tie gave them a comfortable win over the flight. Holly and John Spofford (Philadelphia Cricket) finished second, 4.5 points behind.
In the second flight, Amanda Bielski (RiverCrest) and Scott Bergson (Little Mill) also had four wins and one tie in their five matches to win the flight. Dale Ralston and Jim Johnson (Talamore) finished second, 5.5 points behind the winners.
In the third flight, it all came down to the last match. Jane and Tim Cousounis (Whitemarsh) held a 1 point lead going into their match against Sue Anderson and Rob McMenamin (Philadelphia Cricket). Anderson/McMenamin’s 2 point margin of victory in the last match was enough to win the flight by one point over the Cousounis duo.
In the fourth flight, Blue Bell’s Barbara and Henry Wadsworth only lost their first match. Wins in the remaining four matches gave them a four point margin of victory in the flight over runners-up Karen and Joe Green (Sandy Run).
In the fifth flight, Valerie and Matthew Manfred (Commonwealth National) dominated, winning all five of their matches. Their 36 points were the most of any pair in the tournament. Ruth and Vincent Calvanese (Talamore) finished second, edging out the third place team by a half point.
