  2000 TOURNAMENTS: C-CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS

«  Go back

History

In 1937 approval was given for three one-day "medal" play tournaments for B and C Players.  $35.00 was to be spent for 1 gross and 2 net prizes.  In 1939 there were 241 entries and 184 played in the B and C Medal Play at St. Davids Golf Club.

Beginning in 1941 the events were divided into separate events for B and C Classes. Through 1955 three events for each class were conducted each year.  It went to two per class from 1956 through 1968 and back to three from 1969 through 1983.  Class D was added in 1978.  Due to small fields in the third stroke play, in 1984 it was changed to a Better-Ball-of-Partners with a shotgun start, followed by lunch and prizes.

FOUR STAR BOWL

The Four Star Bowl was awarded in 1938 by Mrs. William S. Baker, Philadelphia Cricket Club, to the Class B player who made the lowest aggregate score in the three B and C Tournaments and the Qualifying Round of the B and C Championships.  Contestants must have been in Class B at the beginning of each tournament.  A replica was awarded to the winner and the Bowl was to be a permanent trophy and kept by the club of the winner for one year.

Starting in 1953 the Four Star Bowl was awarded to the player starting and ending the season in Class C who made the lowest aggregate gross score in the three Class C Medal Play Tournaments and the B and C Championships.  This change was due to the adjusted handicaps in each class.

It was felt that the “Four Star Bowl did not exemplify the goals of The Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia” and it was discontinued at the end of 1955.  The Executive Committee felt it “did not encourage improvement and eliminated anyone who went from Class C to Class B”.  Mrs. Baker was contacted about the change and was “very much pleased with the decision”.  The Bowl was called in at the end of the year to be remarked and reworded.  It has been used as the permanent trophy for the Class B Championship ever since.

A Class C Championship Bowl was added in 1956 and a Class D Bowl in 1978.  Aggregate scores from two day stroke play events determine the B, C and D Champions.
